Can I still be a U.S. citizen if I’ve lived in the U.S. for years without legal status?

A: Yes, if you gained U.S. citizenship at birth through a U.S. citizen parent, your current status does not affect your citizenship. You remain a U.S. citizen regardless of your legal status in the U.S. You can apply for a U.S. passport or Certificate of Citizenship to document your citizenship.
